Postcard of Big Bear Lake, from the artist's files. Lukits painted his first California works in Big Bear Lake in 1921.
Theodore Lukits in hiking clothing with his pochade box for painting plein-air on his back. One of Lukits' first series of California plein-air pastels, which depicts the characteristic rocks near Big Bear Lake. These early works feature a lighter palette than his pastels of 1922 - 1930. Kamiyama Sojin was one of Lukits' favorite models. He was the villain in the original "The Thief of Baghdad" (1924), directed by Raoul Walsh.
