Theodore N. Lukits (1897-1992)

There is only a small number of marines among the hundreds of plein-air pastels that Theodore Lukits painted. Although he enjoyed painting the ocean, he usually preferred to depict the sunset, so he would only do a single pastel on a trip to Santa Monica or Laguna. Lukits also worked in oil on some occasions, and this may account for the relative scarcity of ocean scenes in pastel. However, Lukits did work a significant number of his pastels into larger oils as ocean scenes sold well for him in galleries, particularly in the 1960s, when marines seemed to be particularly popular.
