| While Theodore Lukits is well known for his plein-air pastels, his works in oil have the same sense of mood and poetry. When painting out of doors, he worked almost exclusively in pastel, which he favored for practical as well as aesthetic reasons. However, when he chose to work one of his studies up for exhibition, he did the larger painting in oil. Based on the records of his participation in solo and group exhibitions and the archived correspondence between Lukits and the dealers who represented him, it is clear that only a fraction of his plein-air pastels were transcribed into the oil medium - perhaps no more than one hundred works in all. By the late 1960s he was still translating the pastels into oil paintings for gallery exhibitons, some forty-five years after he did the original sketch. On rare occasions Lukits did work on location using oils, and the small work that opens this section of the website, depicting Mt. Wilson, which looms above Pasadena, is an excellent example. He usually exhibited medium-sized paintings but the landscapes and marines he painted in oil ranged from about 16" x 20" to as large as 36" x 48". | ||||||||||||||||
