While Theodore Lukits enjoyed striking out on longer painting trips to the High Sierras or out to the Mojave, he also painted extensively in the local foothills and mountains. He tended to favor working in the winter and spring when there were clouds to give his compositions an added sense of drama. Many of these works were painted in the San Gabriel Mountains - some on the floodplain at Santa Anita Canyon, others in the Pomona Valley or along the old "Ridge Route," north of Los Angeles.
